REFERENCE SERVICE

All eight University libraries provide help in finding your way around the collections, using our services optimally and learning effective research strategies.

WHO  MAY USE THE REFERENCE SERVICE

All the registered users of Pavia University libraries are entitled to submit bibliographical enquiries.

ABOUT THE SERVICE

The Reference service is structured on different levels.

QUICK REFERENCE

This is provided at the information desk, where you can gather general information on:

  • how to consult or borrow books
  • how to do simple research in our University OPAC (Union Catalogue)
  • how to handle simple bibliographical enquiries
  • how to access the library services.

SPECIALIZED REFERENCE

This is granted only by appointment with qualified librarians dealing with advanced information research (Reference Managers). They can provide you with specific information about:

  • advanced bibliographical research strategies
  • key sources of information and their use (Databases, e-journals, specialized browsers, and so on)
  • management of automatic bibliographies created through the main software in this area (for example,  EndNote Web)
  • bibliometric indicators (Impact Factor, H-Index, etc…).

TRAINING CLASSES

The University Library System offers its users a structured program of courses and meetings to present and give information about the bibliographic resources and services available in the libraries.

The training courses are structured on different levels.

 Basic Level:

  • Basic information on the tools and services offered by the University Library System delivered through tutorials and slides available on the Kiro platform.
  • FAQ answering basic questions pertaining to libraries, available by accessing the “Ask Us” service.
  • BIBLIORIENTEERING: Meetings delivered in-person at the beginning of the academic year for all degree programs aimed at literacy by introducing and orienting students within the university library system. Provides an overview of bibliographic research tools currently in use and aimed at developing an autonomous and flexible method of study.

Intermediate Level

  • TESIFOCUS: Monthly meetings (no July and August) conducted in-person and remotely designed primarily for undergraduates in all subject areas that illustrate how to conduct effective bibliographic research and how to set up thesis work.
  • BIBLIOHUB: Monthly in-person workshop meetings on bibliography management and bibliographic research (cross-disciplinary for all subject areas)

 Advanced Level: On-demand Sessions.

The topics covered in individual courses will be based on the methodological structuring of bibliographic research, the most significant techniques of searching for documentary information in digital media, and the easy and fast retrieval of print and electronic sources, agreed with the requesting faculty according to the needs of individual subject areas.
